Eligibility Guidelines
Qualification for coverage through OpenRoad Insurance depends on both vehicle eligibility and owner/driver eligibility. These guidelines are designed to insure vehicles that are maintained, stored, and used in a manner consistent with collector or specialty ownership.
Final eligibility is determined based on the totality of risk characteristics and applicable underwriting guidelines.
Vehicle Usage & Mileage
OpenRoad policies allow insured vehicles to be used for:
- Car club functions
- Exhibitions and shows
- Organized meets, tours, and rallies
- Pleasure driving
Insured vehicles may not be used as primary or regular daily transportation.
Seasonal or limited commuting to work may be considered on an exception basis for certain vehicles, subject to underwriting review and state availability.
Mileage Guidance
- Annual mileage of 3,500 miles or less is generally consistent with collector vehicle usage.
- Mileage up to 7,500 miles annually may be considered depending on:
- Vehicle type
- Vehicle age
- Condition
- Storage
- Household vehicle profile
Mileage expectations may vary for:
- Collector trucks
- Specialty vehicles
- Vehicles model year 1990 and newer
Specific vehicle categories may have additional usage or mileage requirements.
Storage Requirements
When your collector car isn't out on the road, we want to make sure it's well protected. OpenRoad recommends storing your vehicle in a fully enclosed, secure structure, such as:
- Private garages
- Pole barns
- Car condominiums
- Enclosed storage units
Every situation is unique, other storage arrangements may be available depending on your state and underwriting review.
Acceptable Storage (with conditions)

All household drivers are subject to underwriting review.
Typically:

Daily-Use Vehicle Requirements
All licensed household drivers must have separate, reliable daily-use transportation.

- Daily-use vehicles must be insured in the applicant’s name
The following are not generally considered acceptable daily-use vehicles:

- Shared or informal access vehicles
Vehicles That May Not Qualify
Not all vehicles qualify for coverage. Certain vehicles may be ineligible based on their risk profile or how they are used.
Examples include:
- Vehicles used as daily drivers
- Off-road or recreational vehicles
- Vehicles used for commercial or business purposes
- Vehicles used for racing or competitive driving
- Motorcycles
Claims History & Disclosure
Applicants must disclose prior claims, losses, and vehicle thefts in accordance with underwriting requirements.
Loss history may impact:

- Coverage terms or conditions
Material misrepresentation or omission may result in declination, cancellation, or rescission as permitted by law.
Liability Coverage Guidelines
OpenRoad recommends carrying liability limits that are consistent with or lower than those on your Personal Auto Policy (PAP). If a PAP is not in place, a Business Auto Policy (BAP) may be considered, provided it includes appropriate personal liability endorsements such as:
- Drive Other Car (DOC)
- Individual Named Insured (INI)
State-specific maximum liability limits may apply when coverage is written in conjunction with a BAP only.
